Viking Dishwasher Will Not Empty in Lexington — Pump, Hose or Air Gap?
Standing water at the end of a cycle means either the drain step ran and achieved nothing or it never ran at all, and the pump noise tells you which. Clear the filter and sump first, then the high loop, the air gap and a disposer knockout left in place.
The cycle ended, the panel says it is finished, and there is grey water lying across the floor of the tub with a lettuce leaf floating in it. The machine is not reporting a problem. That contradiction — a satisfied appliance and a wet tub — is the useful part, because a dishwasher that tried to drain and could not behaves very differently from one that never attempted the step at all.
Before anything else: is this actually a fault?
A small amount of water sitting in the sump at the end of every cycle is designed behaviour, not a failure. It keeps the pump seal wet so it does not dry out and start weeping. The line to draw is between a shallow film in the recess around the filter, which is normal, and standing water across the flat floor of the tub deep enough to disturb when you open the door, which is not.
Judge it by where the water sits rather than by whether there is any. If it is confined to the sump well and the tub floor around it is merely damp, nothing is wrong. If it covers the base, laps at the bottom rack, or comes out over the lip when you pull the door, the drain step did not complete.
Then write three things down before touching anything, because they narrow the field faster than any inspection. When did it begin — one specific cycle, or gradually over weeks? Does it happen on every programme or only the short one? And has anything been done in that kitchen recently: a machine pulled out and refitted, a sink replaced, work under the counter? Start at the bottom of the tub
Pull the lower rack out and take the filter assembly apart. On most machines it is a cylindrical coarse filter that twists free after a quarter-turn, sitting in a flat fine screen that lifts out once the cylinder is clear. Take it to the sink, rinse it under a hot tap, and use a soft brush on the mesh rather than anything that will open up the weave.
What comes off it is evidence in its own right. Paper labels from jars, fruit stones, seeds and rice are a blockage story and mean the filter has been left too long. A greasy film that slides rather than rinses says loads are running cooler than the soil deserves. A rough, chalky deposit that resists a brush is scale, which builds slowly and is why a machine that has been fine for years can drift into this fault without anything actually breaking.
With the filter out, look into the sump underneath. A shard of glass, a bone fragment or a plastic tab lodged where the impeller turns will stop the pump moving water while everything else about the cycle looks entirely normal. Wear a glove and clear anything you can see and reach; do not poke about blind. Everything between the machine and the drain
Downstream of the pump the water has to climb before it falls. The hose is routed up to a high point — either a loop fixed under the counter or an air gap on the sink deck — before dropping to its connection, and the reason is to stop waste water tracking back into the tub. Plenty of installations use one arrangement and plenty use the other; what matters is that a rise exists somewhere.
Two failures live here. A hose that has lost its loop, usually because the machine was pulled out and pushed back without anyone re-clipping it, drains sluggishly or siphons back. And a hose crushed against the cabinet frame or trapped under a levelling foot when the unit went back into its opening will restrict flow permanently.
The third is the classic, and it is worth checking first if a waste disposer has been fitted at any point. New disposers arrive with the dishwasher inlet blanked off by a knockout plug that has to be driven out before the connection is made. Miss it and the machine cannot discharge at all, from the first cycle onward. If the trouble began the week a disposer was replaced, start there rather than inside the appliance.
Cycle faults that look like plumbing faults
Here is the split that gives this article its name: listen to the machine at the point where it should be pumping out. A drain pump that energises makes a distinct, higher-pitched sound quite unlike the wash. If you hear it running and the water does not go, you have a restriction. If that sound never arrives at all, the pump was never asked, and the fault is electrical or in the control rather than in the plumbing.
That distinction is worth more than any code on the display. Codes are useful and worth writing down, but a code reports the condition the control observed — water still present when it expected none — and not the component responsible. A machine can report a drain fault when the pump is perfect and the hose is kinked, and it can report nothing at all when the pump has quietly stopped.
A cancel-and-drain programme is a test rather than a repair. Run it once, with the tub as it is, and watch: if it clears the water, the pump and the path both work and the fault sits in whatever the main cycle was doing; if it does nothing, you have confirmed a hard fault and can stop repeating it. Do not pour anything into the tub to help. Chemical drain products are not made for these machines and can attack seals and pump components, which converts a blocked filter into a parts order.
What to hand over to a technician
Stop immediately for any of these: a burning smell while the machine is running, a breaker that trips, or water appearing on the floor outside the appliance. A visit brings the two things a kitchen lacks: access, and instruments. Is the drain pump actually being commanded, and does it pull current when it is? What does the hose flow once it is off the machine? Is the check valve seating? And what does the control’s own service data record about the last cycle, as against what the display is willing to admit? Those checks separate a blockage from a dead pump from a control fault, and they are why the guesswork stops being economical after the filter.

What does a fault code on the display actually tell me?
It tells you what the control noticed, not what broke. A drain-related code means the machine still detected water when it expected an empty tub, and the pump, the hose, a blocked filter or the control itself could each produce that condition. Write the exact characters down before cutting power. The code is genuinely useful to whoever attends, as a starting point rather than as a conclusion.
Can I pour vinegar or a drain cleaner in to clear it?
Not drain cleaner. Those products are formulated for waste pipework, and inside an appliance they attack seals, plastics and pump components, which turns a blocked filter into a parts order. Vinegar is milder and will not do quick damage, but it also will not shift what actually blocks a drain — a soaked-off label, a fruit stone, a splinter of glass in the sump. Remove the obstruction instead.
How often is the filter supposed to be cleaned?
Take the interval from your own model's literature rather than a general number, because it varies with the machine and with how heavily it is loaded. In practice a household that scrapes plates lightly and runs a load every day reaches it sooner than any published schedule suggests.
